Repping the Brand

Everyday as soon as I log in I check a few news sites. A few local, national, and international sites. I hit the headlines, see if anything jumps out at me, check the market, (because that’s where the news actually originates…), and then start my day. Almost without fail I read something from those that oppose my right to self protection.

Every single day. The media attacks your right to self protection. That sickens me.

It also worries me.

I worry about my daughters. I worry about my wife, and my mother. I worry about those that would need an equalizer. Those that oppose your right to self protection will tell you to call 911. I would ask them, what is the average response time to a 911 call for help? That time varies based on area but the average is 10 minutes. Imagine your loved one being attacked. How long do you want them to have to wait before help arrives? We know the answer. Zero wait time. We also know how we can make it so our loved one doesn’t have to wait for help to arrive. We can train and equip them to be their own emergency response.

But not if we keep handing our head to our enemy. Rep the brand better. Me, you, everyone else. We have to do a better job of repping the multi-disciplinary brand. A friend and fellow SBG Coach recently shared with me that he doesn’t use foul or vulgar language, he doesn’t drink to excess, and he makes sure he is always clean, well groomed, and neatly dressed. Why? Because he wants to rep the brand of SBG as well as possible. He doesn’t want to do anything that would give ammo to those that would criticize him as another meathead jock. Now, they might still form those opinions but he’s not going to do anything to help them sell those opinions to those that are on the fence. The media, and their allies have painted those that believe in the ultimate right to self protection as knuckle-dragging, uncivilized meatheads. People that can’t wait to do harm, or to take a life. Those that oppose our right to self protection have done a great job in selling that barbaric image to the public. To be fair we haven’t always helped our cause, and I’ve been the among the worst offenders.

However, it’s time to take that weapon away from our enemies. We all have one job. Just represent the brand well. Be well spoken, polite, and represent our brand, our community well. It’s not that hard, there are a lot of positives in this endeavor. It’s time to start putting the spotlight on those aspects. The media, and the anti-self protection folks will make sure the negative is highlighted. We can’t be overly concerned with that aspect. However, we can make sure there isn’t anything negative for them to show, and that our positive contributions far out-weigh any negatives.

Is Consistency Enough?

For years I’ve encouraged others, and often myself through self-talk, to just be consistent. Keep showing up. Put in the work, consistently over time, and we’ll reap the rewards.

I forgot one important word. Intelligent.

Consistent, intelligent effort over time. Our effort has to be intelligent. We can work consistently, for years, in the wrong direction (unintelligently), only to arrive at a destination we didn’t want to reach. This is why good coaching is essential. To avoid pitfalls, stay on track, and keep ourselves pointed in the right direction as we travel.

Hate Is My Pre-Workout

   Language/Rant Warning.

I probably shouldn’t listen to Rollins while writing…

I sometimes wonder how coal miners, farmers, dock workers, and iron workers were able to function in the days before supplements such as pre-workout drinks existed. I’m relieved that nobody told Rosie the Riverter she couldn’t start kicking ass and taking names without her pre-workout. “Sorry boss, I realize we need this battleship built but I’m all out of magical powder” probably wouldn’t be an acceptable reason for a slowdown in production. There was Nazi, Socialist, and Fascist ass to kick and those planes, tanks, and ships weren’t going to build themselves. Those folks did, (and do), the work regardless of whether they were hungry, exposed to cold or intense heat, thirsty, sick, or injured.

Sometimes I run into trainees that feel they can’t lift, run, roll, or bang unless they are well hydrated, or have eaten the proper ratio of macros, as well as taken their pre-workout. They just can’t get motivated without it. How about the thought that somewhere out there is a violent criminal offender that is waiting for the opportunity to prey on you and/or your loved ones?! When that day comes, will we tell the bad guy to give us a few minutes so our pre-workout can kick in before we get it on?! Murphy’s law tells us this is going to happen at the worst time for us. The day we haven’t eaten properly, hydrated enough, and aren’t on our “A” game. That’s exactly the day the violent criminal actors will come knocking. Here’s the thing; nobody cares if we’re not ready. In that moment we’ve got to bring it! We are all we’ve got no one is coming to help us, and if recent trends are any indicator most people are just going to video the event and post it on YouTube or Facebook live it. They won’t help us.

Imagine this for a moment; the only thing between this violent criminal piece of shit offender and your loved ones is you. Maybe it’s someone you know or are aware of, they’ve stalked and threatened you, your significant other and/or your family for a long time, now they are acting on their threats, and you were just waiting for this day. Maybe it’s someone(s) you’ve never seen before but for some reason they selected you. Are you badass enough? Are you ready? There is only one acceptable answer to that question.

With that thought in mind, do we need magical powders to get it up for another session on the mat or in the ring, to dry fire, hit the weight room chasing those numbers, or do another conditioning session. Loving all this stuff we do, and reaping all the benefits this pursuit brings should be enough motivation to do work however, on those days when we’re dragging ass? Look around at the life we’ve built, the loved ones we cherish, and think about those violent criminal actors that would take it all away. Fuck that noise. The rush I get when I think about that day is greater than any powder that can be found on your local supplement store shelf. I’m sure you feel the same way.

The vast majority of the time I need no assistance to do the work. The positive benefits of this endeavor on my life are countless, and seeing those benefits daily are usually enough. However, on those odd days when I’m just not feeling it I don’t reach for a tub of the latest proprietary blend. I look inside and remind myself of the martial nature of this pursuit. That’s all I need to obliterate excuses, crush weaknesses, and prepare for the day. Anything else just gets in the way.
